So we have had some major changes in the area newspapers lately.
The Daily Democrat gets high marks from me for having comments on their stories. I really like that.
The Woodland Record should be an interesting edition to Woodland. These guys are trying it the new way -- not much infrastructure. Should be interesting.
Finally, today I looked at the NEW Sacramento Bee. I was anxious to see it when I heard about it on the radio. From my point of view it is kind of like the local edition of USA Today. I like that the editorial page has moved to the front section, don't care about the cartoons. and don't like the stories being shorter.
I actually like the longer more in depth stories but I guess I am just odd. They are going to produce what sells. |

No, The Bee is going to produce what it can with its limited staff and even more limited news hole and pretend to be the same newspaper it was just 10 years ago. If The Bee produced "what sells," it wouldn't be in its current trouble.
The Bee waited too long to reinvent itself. It had a chance back before the real estate market collapsed. It had the money then. Handsome profit-sharing checks were being handed out. The Bee managers knew the problem. The writing was on the wall. But The Bee couldn't move fast enough. Management of The Bee and the corporate officers distracted by the merger with Knight Ridder must bear all of the blame for the state of The Bee today, shrunken in both physical size and the size of its shadow over the community. Not long from now, no one will care what happens to The Bee. It will just be too irrelevant.
