So on Friday I got to see one. Did not really know what to expect but it turns out that they come in all sizes.
I actually touched one and did not get killed. I even set it on my kids play table. After I took the picture I left it there. My kids didn't even seem to care. Jenn was the one that eventually ended up moving it.
If we are going to have a needle exchange program then we should have these containers to try to recover some of the 11,000 needles that are floating around out there.
I actually do think they should be anywhere we have a history of finding needles. That includes city parks, county buildings, shelters...hunt where the ducks are.
The needle exchange program still seems crazy to me. It always will. Helping an addict facilitate the injection of poison into their body under the banner of public health is simply wrong to me.
However, if we are going to have the program I think my family and friends are safer to have these Sharps containers available in parks than without them.
This one seems pretty simple. It locks. The Diet Coke is there for size reference. It could easily be attached to the wall.
When it is full you can pull the liner out and safely cap it. The part you don't see is the box that you put the red thing in to mail it for safe disposal. Once the needle goes inside everyone is safer.
The more I learn about these things the more I am finding that they are very common. I never realized how many people take shots daily for medication.
Here is some information
on the company that makes the container.
