The media is filled with stories this morning about the Governor's comments about the use of Spanish and English. The Spanish language journalists did not want to hear him encourage people to turn off their televisions. But he is right.
In California if we graduate students from high school that can't read, write, and speak English we are doing a poor job of preparing these young people to compete in the business world. For adults that come to the United States we need to do everything we can to encourage them to learn English. This allows them a better opportunity to be self-sufficient.
If you are a shareholder in a Spanish language media company you are not pleased with the comments made by the Governor. If you are looking to improve the academic performance of thousands of students you should be.
Critics can rip the Governor all they want for not delivering the message the crowd wanted to hear. Sometimes it is best for a crowd to hear what they need as opposed to what they want. The Governor is right.

In the Tit for Tat Segment;
What do you think about the "new" dealership in the old Citizen's Chevrolet location flying the American Flags next to the Snake eating Chicken Flags. I know Flag etiquette state the American Flag is not to be used as an advertising gimmick. I did not notice a Snake eating flag in a position higher or superior to the Ensign. In my humble opinion it looks tacky.

Good for the Governor!!!!....He is exactly correct. To succeed you in today’s world you need to be fluent in English. We have a duty to every child, citizen or not, to give them the opportunity to successful in life...and that starts with English (BTW...what every happened to the public school ‘English Emersion’ proposition that was overwhelming approved by the California voters?)
I travel a lot...(world-wide)...and almost everyplace I go people delight in practicing their English with me. Yet, recently when I came home for a visit, I went into the Woodland Wal-Mart... I asked the floor employee where to find and item ...she said 'No comprend English'! My jaw just about hit the floor....you think at a minimum...to work the ‘floor’ at Wal-Mart… minimal fluency in English would be a requirement for employment. I am still shocked over that.
I also remember a few years back going to the school in Knights Landing to present a Boy Scout program to the kids. More than half of them had no idea what I was saying because I spoke in English. It broke my heart because the public school system was letting these children down.
Every child need a fare chance to succeed in life regardless of race, creed or social- economic background and English a key component of the worldwide market place, very necessary getting a good job, and being successful in America. Almost every other country in the world 'Gets It'...
Why is it that we, the most successful democracy on earth don't seem to ‘get it’????

Gosh...even my 'Mrs', who is Korean, is better writing English than me (she can speak 4 languages...smart gal)...(still can't figure why she married me...laugh).
OK... "immersion".... Since my ethic background is German (5 generations removed)....lets drop the English language for German..(LMAO)!
Humbly, Barron Von-Charlie-san 'the English challenged'
PS....'Go Dog Go' by P.D. Eastman is a wonderful novel...(wink)
