Jack and the Beanstalk > Rexroad.com

So I am now a regular consumer of books written primarily for kids. [Please hold jokes about the Board of Supervisors.]

Previously I posted about Snow White and the violence. Today I am hacked off at Jack and the Beanstalk.

For those of you that don’t remember, Jack is not a good character. He makes a bad trade for a cow when he gets 5 beans. Later he steals the gold that belongs to the Giant. Then he spends all of that money and goes back up the beanstalk to steal the hen that lays golden eggs. Even though Jack and his mom are doing great with the stolen hen he goes back for more and steals the singing harp.

If that isn’t enough, Jack kills the Giant by cutting down the beanstalk and then is able to live “happily ever after” with all of his stolen gear.

I might be missing something but these don’t seem like very good role models for my kids.

If I lost everything and stole to provide for my family I am sure that some of you might excuse that behavior. But I seriously doubt anyone would be writing children’s stories about me if I was able to provide for my family but then went and broke into Flory’s Jewelers to take more stuff and then shot the owner when he tried to get his stuff back.

Maybe it should be updated to

"Jack and the Crackhouse" where Jack robs the crack heads, messes with the dealers, does a drive-by on the giant, carjacks the pimps on West Capitol Avenue, disses the Broderick boys, just your average all around pain in the hiney......a new reality show.
