So tonight after dinner Abbie and I went on the last tour of the year to look at the Bats with the
Yolo Basin Foundation
. It was excellent.
We started with a class where Abbie got to meet Buddy the Bat. We learned a little bit about the bats in the area and got some fact v. fiction.
Clearly the highlight was heading out to the over pass between West Sacramento and Davis where they estimate 250,000 Mexican Freetail bats live at this time of year.
We drove around for a while to look at the land in the basin and then stopped near the causeway. It is interesting that the bats mostly live on the West Sacramento end. They then fly west until they get to a tree and head up into the sky.
We were told that these little guys fly up to 50 miles in a night looking for chow.
Great night for Abbie and me. It was good to spend some time with her. I have some pictures below of the bats and Abbie/Olivia aka Bat Girls.
Here is my best shot.
It was kind of hard for me to take good pictures of the bats. I did my best above. They just kept coming and coming.
Below and the Bat Girls.
